School settings
A school sits between the account above it and its libraries below. A handful of settings live at the school level rather than at the library, because they apply to records shared across libraries (patrons, homerooms) or encode a school-wide rather than library-wide policy.
For the school as a concept (what it owns and shares), see Schools. For the per-library equivalents, see Library settings. For the account above the school (billing, owners, the set of schools), see Accounts.
The Profile fields
Section titled “The Profile fields”Path: School level navigation path: Configure then Settings, the card: Profile card. Editing these is a school admin action; non-admin staff see the values but not the button: Edit controls. button: Edit opens the dialog: Edit Profile dialog:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| field: School name | The school’s name. Appears in notice emails, on the OPAC, and in the staff app. |
| field: Logo | Uploaded image. Shown on the OPAC homepage and in notice email headers. |
| field: Accent color | Background of the school’s avatar in the staff app when there’s no logo. Hex picker. Only offered while no logo is set; remove the logo to change it. |
| field: Timezone | The school’s timezone. Auto-detected from your browser at sign-up; used by the overdue-notice scheduler, the loan-period calculator, what counts as overdue, and the nightly roster sync schedule. Times shown in Lyra, like when an import ran, use your own device’s time zone instead. |
A separate card: Grades card on the same page holds the school’s grade range. Its button: Edit opens the dialog: Edit Grades dialog:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| field: Lowest grade | The lowest grade you serve (e.g., K for an elementary, 6 for a middle school). |
| field: Highest grade | The highest grade you serve (e.g., 5 for an elementary, 12 for a K-12, 8 for a middle school). |
The academic year start is not on this page, it lives on the Calendar page, covered below.
Changing grades
Section titled “Changing grades”Highest grade
Section titled “Highest grade”The cap used by the grade-level override editor and the patron grade-level dropdowns. Raising it (from 8 to 12, say, after adding a high school) is uneventful: existing patrons aren’t affected; new grades become available for grade-level overrides.
Lowering it warrants more care, as the caution below explains.
The Calendar
Section titled “The Calendar”Path: School level navigation path: Configure then Calendar. Editing the calendar is a school admin action, the button: Edit and button: Add holiday controls aren’t shown to non-admin staff. Two things live here: the academic year start and the holiday list.
Academic year start
Section titled “Academic year start”The field: Year starts date, a field: Month and field: Day, in the dialog: Edit Academic Year dialog that the card: Academic Year card’s button: Edit opens. It defaults to August 1.
This is the day your students move up a grade. Lyra stores each student’s Class year (the year they graduate), not their grade, and works the grade out from the class year, the school’s highest grade, and which academic year today falls in. So on this date every year, every student’s grade goes up by one and the students in your highest grade graduate, showing their class year instead of a grade. Nobody edits the roster. The dialog spells out what the date you pick will do before you save.
The same date decides when a date shown in Lyra needs its year: a date inside the current academic year shows as Sep 3, and one outside it as Jun 11, 2026.
Changing this does not retroactively reshape historical academic years. It changes the cutoff for computing the current year and, by extension, every patron’s current grade on the next page load.
If you move it across today’s date, for example from September 1 back to August 1 in mid-August, every student moves up a grade straight away. Plan the change for a break, not the first or last week of a term.
Holiday calendar
Section titled “Holiday calendar”A list of closed periods that affects every library in the school. Each entry is a date range with a start and end date, so a week-long spring break is one row, not five. Used by:
- setting: Never due on weekends or holidays in a library’s dialog: Edit Library Defaults dialog, on libraries that have it on. A computed due date that lands inside a closed range rolls forward to the next open day.
- Notice scheduler. Overdue notices that would otherwise fire on a closed day still fire on schedule; the closed-day list affects when items come due, not when notices send.
To add a closure:
- Select button: Add holiday.
- Enter a field: Name, then pick the first and last day of the closure in field: Dates. For a single-day closure, pick the same day twice. Days before today can’t be picked.
- Select button: Add holiday. Turn on setting: Add another first to keep the dialog open for the next entry.
The card: Upcoming Holidays card lists only closures that haven’t ended yet. To change an entry, select button: Edit on its row and select button: Save; to remove it, select button: Delete in the same dialog. Bulk import isn’t supported; type each one in.
A multi-campus school with different campus calendars would have to pick one shared list. (If that’s a real constraint for you, get in touch.)
Branding and where it appears
Section titled “Branding and where it appears”The school name and logo appear in:
- The OPAC. Logo on the homepage hero, name in the title.
- Notice emails. Logo and name in the email header.
- The staff app. Name and avatar in the level switcher at the top of the sidebar. The avatar is the logo, or, without one, the school’s initial on its accent color.
A few practical notes:
- The logo should be a transparent PNG. Lyra renders it on a light background in the staff app and a configurable background in the OPAC. JPEGs with white backgrounds work but look dated.
- Recommended dimensions. At least 400px wide. Lyra scales down for smaller surfaces.
- If the upload fails, the dialog says message: Logo upload failed. Try it again. under field: Logo, and the previous logo stays. Pick the file again.
Branding is set once at the school. There’s no per-library override; every library in the school shares the same name and logo.
Label sheets
Section titled “Label sheets”The card: Label Sheets card lists label sheets and label printer rolls your school has set up for stock Lyra doesn’t list. Every library in the school prints on them. A school admin, or anyone who manages one of the school’s libraries, can add, edit, clone, and delete them; an admin can also make one the library-card default from its row’s menu. See Your school’s own sheets.
A sheet that prints a little off, library cards included, is corrected on the sheet itself with field: Move right and field: Move down. See Adjusting for your printer.
Adding and removing libraries
Section titled “Adding and removing libraries”A school can hold any number of libraries. Creating, renaming, and destroying libraries are school admin actions (not a library-manager one), and all of them happen on the school’s screen: Libraries page (the school shell’s landing page). The first library is created during onboarding; after that, button: Add a library creates more, and each library’s card carries an actions menu (⋯) with menu item: Manage managers…, menu item: Rename…, and menu item: Delete. Deleting asks you to type the library’s name to confirm, then permanently removes that library’s catalog, copies, and circulation data, patrons and homerooms are untouched, because they belong to the school. Each library owns its own items, copies, and policies, while patrons and homerooms are shared across the school.
Permanent deletions
Section titled “Permanent deletions”The bottom of School level navigation path: Configure then Settings has a card: Permanent Deletions card. It shows each action only to the people allowed to take it:
- button: Delete roster data, for a school admin. Permanently deletes all patrons and homerooms and their circulation data (holds and active loans), with setting: Also delete checkout history to also delete checkout history. Use it to clear practice data before a real import, not as a routine tool.
- button: Delete school, for an account owner. Permanently deletes this school and everything in it. Type the school’s name to confirm and select button: Delete school; Lyra then takes you to the account’s screen: Overview.
