Lyra vs. Atriuum

An Atriuum alternative, built for independent schools.

Atriuum is a capable, established system used across every kind of library. Here is what changes when you choose Lyra, built for independent schools, and what Lyra leaves out.

The short version

Atriuum is built for every library. Lyra is built for yours.

Atriuum is a capable, established library system. Book Systems has been at this since 1989, and Atriuum runs in public, academic, special, and school libraries of every size. It includes a lot: broad standards and single sign-on at no extra cost, Z39.50 cataloging, digital integrations, and dedicated patron and staff apps.

The difference is who it is built for, and how you buy it. Atriuum is general-purpose, designed to serve every kind of library, and its sales process matches that range. Pricing comes through a quote and a conversation. Cover art comes through paid content enrichment.

Lyra is built for independent schools, not a system that also happens to serve them. The price is published. Cover images are included. You import your catalog and roster yourself, with no sales call. Vega, the assistant built into Lyra, answers questions about your collection, and Lyra never reads patron names, IDs, emails, or individual borrowing history out of your records and into it. We publish the field list. Where Atriuum gives you breadth, Lyra gives you fit.

Lyra vs. Atriuum

A focused, two-column look.

The same questions a librarian actually asks when evaluating a system. Where Lyra does something differently, we say so plainly, and where Atriuum already covers the basics, we say that too.

In the interest of honesty

Where Lyra does less than Atriuum.

Atriuum is a strong system, and against it the gap is smaller than against an enterprise platform. Here is what Lyra leaves out that Atriuum covers, so you can weigh whether any of it matters to you.

SIP2, NCIP, and Z39.50, included

Atriuum bundles SIP2, NCIP, and Z39.50 cataloging at no extra cost. Lyra supports none of them. Both include single sign-on.

This matters if: you run self-checkout stations, share resources with other libraries, or copy-catalog over Z39.50.

Fines and fees

Atriuum tracks fines and fees. Lyra doesn't charge fines.

This matters if: your library collects fines today.

Digital lending

Atriuum integrates with ebook and audiobook providers like OverDrive and hoopla. Lyra does not lend digital materials. If you use Sora, Lyra can list your OverDrive titles in its catalog from OverDrive's MARC records, and students open them in Sora. Other ebook providers aren't supported. Lyra can't show whether a copy is free or let students borrow from its catalog. If your school uses Sora and that would matter to you, tell us.

This matters if: digital is central to your library.

Mature mobile apps

Atriuum ships dedicated patron and staff apps, Librista and Stax. Lyra runs in any browser instead.

This matters if: a native app matters to your patrons.

Track record

Book Systems has been doing this since 1989, across many library types. Lyra is new.

This matters if: your school needs a long, proven record.
The honest note

Atriuum is established. Lyra is new.

That is the trade, and for the right school it is also the opportunity: help shape the product, pay half price for your first term, and work directly with the people building it. If a long track record and the widest feature set are high on your list, those are fair things to weigh, and we'd rather you know where we are than oversell it.

FAQ

Questions schools ask.

Is Lyra a good alternative to Atriuum?

For an independent or private K–12 school that wants a focused, modern system with published pricing and self-serve setup, yes. Atriuum is a capable, broader general-purpose system; Lyra deliberately covers less and focuses on the daily work of a school library. If that full breadth (digital lending, wide protocol support, or fines) is central to how you run, those are the areas to weigh.

Does Atriuum charge extra for cover images?

Cover art comes through paid content enrichment, either Book Systems' OPAC Snapshot or a Syndetics subscription. Lyra includes cover images at no extra charge.

How much does Atriuum cost?

Book Systems does not publish Atriuum pricing; you request a quote. Lyra publishes its pricing on the site.

Can I move my catalog from Atriuum to Lyra?

Yes. Lyra imports a standard MARC file, and also the Excel workbook Atriuum exports. It will try to match that report’s column names to Lyra’s, though the import guide’s templates are the cleaner path. Rosters sync via OneRoster. To export your records from Atriuum, follow Book Systems’ own documentation.
